Heeling Sole studio tour

Here’s what your appointment will be like!

This great video FOOTage will take you on a walkabout inside our clinic to see what happens before and during your session. You’ll see what our styles of barefoot massage look like (and no, barefoot massage is not the same thing as foot massage or reflexology!) and you’ll learn about what we have to offer overall, while getting a tour of Heeling Sole’s lobby, massage rooms, and classroom space.

We are located at 1864 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, Texas, 78209 in the Alamo Heights neighborhood of San Antonio, in the Carousel Court shopping center. You’ll need to book an appointment ahead of time, as we rarely have same day walk-in sessions available.

Schedule your Ashiatsu, Ashi-Thai or Fijian Barefoot Massage by calling us at 210.560.1992, or book online!

Not sure what to expect from Heeling Sole?

Your first visit we’ll have you complete a health intake form. Recurring visits entail a breif check up for paperwork and progress sake. After a thorough health intake with your massage therapist, we will be able to best suit the needs of your session for the day. Knowing a history of your aches, pains, diagnosed conditions, past surgeries, trauma, medications, etc. gives us a safe point of reference to start from. Please read this page on our website regarding if Barefoot Massage is right for you at this time.

You must be at least 18 years of age, and weigh over 130 pounds. Texas state massage law dictates that minors may receive massage therapy with the guardians consent and they also state that the parent/guardian be in the same room during the session, however, due to the fact that our massage therapists are at times 2-4 feet off the ground working hard to balance and focus, we do not allow a second person in the massage room as it can be a distraction and a safety concern to all parties involved in the massage.

We’ll leave the massage room to give you time to undress and settle in beneath the sheets on our deluxe w-i-d-e, padded and warm massage table. If you are receiving an Ashiatsu massage, it is imperative that you undress completely. Yes, I said it, there’s not much “undressing to your comfort level” here at Heeling Sole. We need to work directly with the tissue in your booty, legs and your feet, so please, remove your undies and socks as well as all the usual clothing, and we PROMISE that we will keep you covered where it counts with a sheet. Professional draping is required by the state of Texas except with written permission – and we at Heeling Sole never work without draping, even if you want us to. This is a professional massage therapy session, and exposed nudity is NOT our thing. We haven’t ever, and don’t need to see that side of you! Underwear is almost an insult to us. For some reason we have no issues pushing through your lovely skin to engage the muscles, but we do get weirded out when our toes get tangled in underwear or when we simply have to step on your skivvies. It becomes a safety issue, and honestly does remove some beneficial work from the massage if we have to skip an area or work through fabric, rather than glide and slide through the skin. HOWEVER if you are receiving just an Ashi-Thai stretching session, not blended with Ashiatsu, please wear flexible clothing – like what you would wear to work out in. We don’t mind stepping on normal clothes 😉

While you undress, we’ll clean, sanitize and warm our feet, and start the session as soon as we return to the room.

You are in control of your massage, and we need you to give instant feedback on the pressure level – we are looking for  no deeper than the “hurts so good level”, and your comfort is always most important to us. We want almost a play-by-play from the horses mouth as we get to know your muscles and your bodies response to our work. Let us know if it needs to be lighter, deeper, a hair to the left, etc, and we’ll adjust right away! Your feedback does NOT hurt our feelings, it’s encouragement for us to give you the best massage possible that day.

If it helps you to relax by having a little conversation outside of the feedback aspect of our communication, go ahead and talk about your great second cousins crazy encounter with aliens, or your friends amazing food, but don’t feel obligated – we love to hear your stories, or the sounds of your snooze. On the flipside, if your body and mind needs silence, we are ninja’s, and we don’t mind working in stealth mode. (Just don’t forget to speak up when pressure needs adjustments!)

Your job during the massage is to focus on your breathing, be heavy, and physically melt into the table. If we try to move your limbs, don’t help. It’s actually better if you are dead weight. So think ~heavy~, be a bag of bones on our table, and we’ll position, stretch or place your limbs exactly where is best for the moment, or if we need you to help, we’ll definitely let you know!

Sessions will incorporate as much “massage time” as possible, however, your session may require 5 minutes of pre-session interviewing, post-session follow-up and/or self-care suggestions to better enhance your massage experience. We’ll take the massage right up to the last minute possible, and will let you know when the session is over, so don’t worry about the time.

You can choose to end the massage at anytime during the session if it’s not your thing – but we bet you’ll be more likely to want to extend the length of this massage!

Healing with Sole Water

Healing with SOLE @ Heeling Sole!

We’ve got an amazing new water dispenser here at the office that works like a giant Brita filter. “What’s so amazing about that, Jeni?”  You ask… “Why are you creating a blog post about your new water jug?!”

HealingSole

Healing Sole water, great for your Healing Soul at Heeling Sole Barefoot Massage & Yoga!

BECAUSE it’s special! One of our yoga instructors, Monica Walker, recently visited Mexico City and brought me back a beautiful raw Aquamarine stone. She picked it for me because in ancient lore, Aquamarines were believed to be the treasure of mermaids, and were used by sailors as a talisman of good luck, fearlessness and protection. It is the stone of the sea, and that’s the thing that I love most. It was also considered a stone of eternal youth and happiness, which is something I am thinking about more and more the closer I get to turning 34 tomorrow!

Well, combine that amazing stone with this new fun water dispenser, and we’ve got Step 1 of our Healing Sole water. The Aquamarine is soaking in the jug, and it’s strong metaphysical properties that are slowly absorbing out into the water will help you to let go of old emotional issues you may be holding on to. (I know I’ve got that to work on!) By assisting us all to release anger and reduce stress, these lovely stones help to heighten your courage when you are handling grief, and are powerful to assist self healing. Out mermaid infused water may help you to make positive changes in your life, as we are creating a positive structural change in your chronic soft tissue issues with each Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage session.

Step 2: Add the SOLE. Monica had an idea. We dissolved diamond-like all natural Himalayan Crystal Salt into the jug, which contain trace minerals essential for life. Dissolved Himalayan Crystals in water make “Sole”, a highly effective energy balancing elixir for the normalization of minerals in the human body. (Look up a Sole recipe for you at home here.) WHO KNEW! I was so amazed to find out that there is actually a healthy water drink that is actually called SOLE, (I didn’t make this up, and NO, it’s not soaked in our feet!) This elixir is so perfect for us here! This dissolved salt has been shown in a clinical study to be effective in helping to stabilize pH and Oxidative Stress numbers – just what the doctor ordered this holiday season.

Himalayan salt is widely touted for its mineral content, containing 84 minerals in total. In addition to sodium, Himalayan salt is relatively high in iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, potassium and chloride. It also contains traces of boron, fluoride, iodine, zinc, selenium and copper, all of which are necessary for bodily health.

And one more thing we’ve added to our water… Step 3 is love. ❤ Have you read the book “Hidden Messages in Water” by Masaru Emotu? He was a Japanese author and entrepreneur, who claimed that human consciousness has an effect on the molecular structure of water. Emoto’s conjecture evolved over the years, and his early work explored his theory that water could react to positive thoughts and words, and that polluted water could be cleaned through prayer and positive visualization. Watch a short video on the fascinating effects on how appreciated water changes under a microscope:

SO, I have written notes of love and thanks on the jug for our water to read, absorb, and energize itself with positive vibes while it awaits your next yearning for a cool gulp of refreshing, healing water.

So drink up some liquid good juju next time you come to our office in Alamo Heights!

It’s great to enjoy after your next Yoga Class here in Carousel Court, as well as before and after each deeper than deep tissue Ashiatsu massage.

Our Walkabout Yoga classes are FEETured in a new San Antonio Express News article!

Thank you so much to the San Antonio Express News and to Jessica Belasco for interviewing our instructor Monica Walker, and sharing information about out outdoor Walkabout Yoga classes in your recent Lifestyle article! We are so excited to get the word out around town about what Heeling Sole has to offer!

Outdoor yoga is all the rage lately – our friends like Monica from “Yogi on a Bicycle with a Mat” and the fearless urban Mobile Om yogi’s are doing a fabulous job of spreading the joy of yoga in unusual locations, and San Antonio loves it! Yoga in nature and urban meditation only makes sense: keeping your focus and balance in any situation is what yoga is all about!

San-Antonio-Cave-Yoga

Heeling Sole holds yoga and meditation classes at the Robber Barron Caves in Alamo Heights

Our Walkabout yoga classes were partially born out of necessity, as Heeling Sole’s yoga studio is ~actually~ a massage training facility, where Ashiatsu 2-4 day workshops for massage therapists are available once a month. While these courses are taking place, all Heeling Sole yoga classes will explore our “Walkabout Yoga” concept as a healthy alternative and a chance to experience yoga in nature. We are so lucky to be located in Alamo Heights, under the sprawling Like Oak trees, surrounded by squirrels, birds and secret outdoor natural wonders that we tend to overlook from our cars.

Please join us! Our next Walkabouts are scheduled to replace our normally occurring classes on Sunday November 2nd, and Monday November 3rd – followed by the next series of Walkabouts happening during every class scheduled on Monday through Wednesday, December 8-10. Bring your walking shoes and dress for the current weather. This special moving yoga class will take a trek through Alamo Heights, leaving from Heeling Sole and travel with a walking mindful meditation to the Robber Barron Cave, pause for creative stretching in shaded nature parks such as the big tree across from the H-E-B on Nacogdoches road, and let you breathe in the nature that surrounds us. I’m looking forward to the Halloween & Dia De Los Muertos weekend classes breathing in the spooky vibes of the cave, and the amazing holiday lights we’ll see during walking meditations in our December classes!

You can read the San Antonio Express News article online here, or view the saved PDF file HERE.

Not up for the outdoors?

If you aren’t up for an outdoor Walkabout class when we offer them – you can still dedicate an hour to your yoga practice and sign up for an Ashi-Thai massage – which is what we like to call “the lazy mans’ yoga” and it’s a specialized form of massage from the best (and only) team of barefoot massage therapists in town.

Read more about how Heeling Sole’s Ashi-Thai barefoot massage can help you focus on your body, increase your range of motion, and propel your yoga practice further.

Getting to know your massage: Part 2

So now that you know WHAT Ashiatsu is, (check out Part 1 of this series of posts here!) the next part about getting to know your massage is all about how to receive a good massage. (Hint: it’s more than just laying there and taking it!)

How to best receive a barefoot massage at Heeling Sole

At your first visit we’ll have you complete a health intake form. Recurring visits entail a brief check up to track your progress. After a thorough review of this information with your massage therapist, (be patient and informative, this stuff is important!) we will be able to best suit the needs of your session for the day. Knowing a history of your aches, pains, diagnosed conditions, past surgeries, trauma, medications, etc. gives us a safe point of reference to start from.

Professional draping is required by the state of Texas except with written permission – and we at Heeling Sole never work without draping anyways, even if you want us to. This is a professional massage therapy session, and exposed nudity is NOT our thing. We haven’t ever, and don’t need to ever,  see that side of you! However, underwear is almost an insult to us. For some reason we have no issues pushing through your lovely skin to engage into and drag across the muscles, but we do get weirded out when our toes get tangled in underwear or when we simply have to step on your skivvies. It becomes a safety issue, and honestly does remove some beneficial elements from the massage if we have to skip an area or work through fabric, rather than glide and slide through the skin. If you are receiving just an Ashi-Thai stretching session, not blended with Ashiatsu, please wear flexible clothing – like what you would wear to work out in. We don’t mind stepping on normal clothes, and we do have a spare pair of scrub pants here for you to borrow if you happen to be wearing jeans, a skirt, or something inflexible. 😉
Alamo-Heights-Deep-Tissue-Massage
While you undress in the massage room, we’ll clean, sanitize and warm our feet, and start the session as soon as we return to the room.

You are in control of your massage, and we need you to give instant feedback on the pressure level – we are looking for  no deeper than the “hurts so good level”, and your comfort is always most important to us. Although Ashiatsu is a “deeper than Deep Tissue” massage, it should not involve a “NO PAIN NO GAIN” mentality. We want almost a play-by-play from the horses mouth as we get to know your muscles and your bodies response to our work. Let us know if it needs to be lighter, deeper, a hair to the left, etc, and we’ll adjust right away! Let us know what it feels like – maybe when we press here, you feel a stretch there, or a referring sensation over yonder … this is all valuable information for us massage therapists! Your feedback does NOT hurt our feelings, it’s encouragement for us to give you the best massage possible that day, and we want to cater this session to you.

If you aren’t yet totally sure if the pressure is too much, try breathing into it, sending your focus directly to that area of your body, and imagine inflating it like a balloon with your breath. Sometimes just a breath and a moment of focus helps direct your brain to the “pain”, and helps you realize that it wasn’t pain at all, it was a dense area of tension!

Hey, whats that song?! We are known for playing not “normal” massage music. We are sick of Enya, honestly. That doesn’t mean we have to rock out to Metallica, but we can change the music to whatever you are in the mood for. Jeni loves to dance on your back to mellow Led Zeppelin tunes or trancey ambient music – but if you aren’t diggin it, just say so, and we can change it up. Except to Enya.

When the massage has come to a close, don’t feel the need to pop up off the table immediately, just take a moment of savasana to assimilate everything and bring yourself back to earth. Always roll over to your side before getting off the table- sitting up like a zombie can make you light headed after all the deep pressure and traction we did to your spine. Then, on your own time, wander up to the front desk to check out, and then float into the world!

The importance of recurring Ashiatsu appointments

One of the biggest requests we get from new clients is “do you offer a discount?” At Heeling Sole we encourage the fact that massage therapy is not a luxury. If you have chronic pain and high stress, one single massage will not do the trick – although it will definitely help with acute pain and reduce the heat of the moment! A series high quality massages that will create a noticeable positive change in chronic soft tissue pain is something that really needs to be budgeted for. Our price reflects the quality of our work, and our discounted massage packages rewards your dedication to yourself.

Scientists and Medical Professionals know that massage is good for you… not only for stress management, but for pain management. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) suggests massage as a non-pharmacological therapy that can be used successfully in pain management. The Journal of Clinical Rheumatology reports massage therapy lowered stress hormones, anxiety and depression in fibromyalgia sufferers and worked more quickly than transcutaneous electrical stimulation. Even DR. OZ recommends regular massage as a way to improve your health.

Regularly scheduled massages is a step in the right direction to a healthier lifestyle

But just like it takes formal research to truly prove the benefits of bodywork, it will take a series of sessions for your massage therapist to discover and treat the restrictions within your tissues. The shorter periods of time you leave between massage sessions (1-2 weeks, for example) allows your body enough time to assimilate the massage, to accept the changes and heal with a lasting effect within those realigned soft tissue structures. Leave too much time between massage appointments, and your body falls back into it’s usual patterns… over-healing the overused muscles, contributing to more scar tissue and adhered myofascial sheets along repetitively strained areas of your physical being. Keeping up with a massage schedule is only hard if  you make it that way. The more regularly your body gets a tune up, the better it will run, the longer it will last, and the more enjoyment you’ll get out of it – just like your car.

Integrating regularly scheduled massages into your life is a big part of your wellness plan – along with exercise, yoga, a healthy diet, and other forms of complementary alternative medicine. So to help you plug massage into your life, we gladly offer discounts to our clients who commit to creating a pattern of massage in their routine. Here’s what we ~always~ have on the menu for you:

  • Package of 3 massages, in lengths of 60/90/120 minute long sessions, use within 3 months Save 10%, 1 massage auto-billed to your credit card monthly.
  • Package of 6 massages, in lengths of 60/90/120 minute long sessions, use within 3 months, Save 12% (for a massage every 2 weeks) 2 massages will be auto-billed to your credit card monthly.

Is Ashiatsu good for Back Pain? Can regular massage inspire a healthy immune support system and help with allergies? Can chronic, nagging muscle and joint pain be relieved through barefoot massage? All this and more is covered in past resources made available from Heeling Sole… check them out: Jeni has the hour-long webinar discussing the Benefits of Barefoot Massage available for free online, an information page on our website covering these subjects, as well as many blog posts explaining the advantageous results of Ashiatsu on our athletic client base.
